The First Day of School
by RivkA

Your first day of school.

You did not need me to see you off.

I got up anyway.

You chose your own clothes.

You did a good job.

You made your own lunches.

And cleaned up after yourself.

You packed your bags.

OK, I helped with that.

You left the house, calmly.

You have done this many times before.

For the first time, I did not take your picture.

I am sorry.

You did not need to mark this day.

I did.

Boy, does this one tug on my heart.

  2. imstell says:

Oh, God. What age does this happen? I’m so not ready.

  3. BCJenster — I didn’t realize just how strong the post might be until my husband read it and said “you are sad.” I guess I am, a bit, though I would describe the poem as “bittersweet.”

Imstell — you have time!! My youngest is ten, going into fifth grade.

May we live long enough to mark all the important events in our children’s lives!!

I was sad, but also happy to witness my children at this stage of their lives.
